I've been unwinding at night and reading for a couple hours before going to sleep. You are absolutely right about being “damned if you do, damned if you dont”. However, the first book and the TV show ended very differently. You are absolutely right about being “damned if you do, damned if you dont”.

However, the first book and the TV show ended very differently. The same ultimate goal was met and Darken Rahl was defeated, but it was in a completely different manner than portrayed on TV.
