Pistol Packin’ 10 Year Old

Earlier today I was going through Google Reader and clearing out old items that I starred for future reading/viewing. Among those items was a post from Shelley Rae, from Gun Nuts Media, featuring 10 year old Cori shooting USPSA. Even though I watched the video back in June, when Shelley posted it, I thought it was cool enough to leave in my starred items folder for future viewing.

If you recall the review I did on Gun Proof Your Children by Massad Ayoob, I have a one year old daughter that I hope has an interest in guns when she gets older. In fact, when my daughter is 10, I hope she is as well disciplined as young Cori.

Notice the great job this young lady does with muzzle control and keeping her finger away from the trigger until she is ready to shoot. In addition, her reloads are better than mine!

  • Walt, great video, brought back some memory’s about Barry, Il. It has been at least 20 years since I have been there, had a great time.

  • Is it only me that finds all this a tad disturbing?

    • Harry,
It is completely understandable that you would find it a tad disturbing. If I lived in a part of the world where there were extensive gun bans, I would probably be uncomfortable with the idea of a child walking around with a pistol.

Having shot a USPSA match recently, I can assure you that my experience was very safe. Young Cori was (based on my experience) the only individual there with a loaded gun (only the shooter has a loaded weapon) and she was being supervised by a qualified range safety officer.

In addition, she followed key safety procedures. The muzzle of her gun was always pointed in a safe direction. Her finger was outside of the trigger guard until she was ready to fire (you’ll see it resting on the slide as she moved from target to target) and she followed the commands of the safety officer.

I’m of the opinion that as long as a child is mature enough to practice safe gun handeling, then they are safe enough to spend time shooting at the range. I may be in the minority, but I am of the midset that guns aren’t evil, they are merely a tool.

Thanks for taking the time to eave a comment

      • Fair point Walt, but if a gun if only a ‘tool’ I would rather my child stayed away from the power drill for a few years yet.
