Range Report: Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm (09/11/2011)

Target - 09-11-11 Range Trip - 1Earlier this week I posted some range video featuring my Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm. I’ve been shooting this pistol a lot as of late. I find it to be lots of fun to shoot and very comfortable. The fact that 9mm is reasonably priced doesn’t hurt either.

In that earlier post, I stated that I was making an effort to improve my shooting and that I also shared the video with PAFOA to get some feedbackOpens in a new tab.. The feedback came pouring in and I began to see many more problem areas than I thought were present.

Eager to test out this newly acquired information, I hit the range the following day. I put fifty rounds through my M&P and focused on the fundamentals. I ditched the superman stance, adjusted my grip, focused on my trigger control, and exaggerated the trigger reset. The changes in my shooting took a lot of concentration but made a big difference in my grouping. While they still are nothing to write home about, I am seeing consistency in my shots.

Since this video was recorded, I have spoken with an instructor. I’m in the process of setting up a time to get some one on one training to tune my shooting. I’m eager to get started and see the results of properly applied fundamentals.

  1. Great episode Walt!!
I am always fascinated with the thinking mentallity of the anti gun politician. The answer always seems to be more legislation punishing the law abiding gun owners, never realizing that criminals will continue to break those laws. I am thankful for the strong gun rights in the Washington state constitution. With the many anti gun politicians we have here it is the only thing saving our gun rights.
    Really enjoy your range videos.
    Keep ’em coming!

    1. Jan,
Thanks for taking the time to watch the videos (this one and the podcast) and leaving a comment.

Hopefully in the next range report video I’ll have some better shooting to show off.

  2. Hay Walt, your getting better, slowly but surely, looks good. Your hands are steady, with the help from your instructor you’ll be in the ”bulls eye” in no time.

    1. Yeah, practicing with a .22 seems to have completely gotten rid of my flinch.

I’m looking forward to shooting with an instructor. It should be educational and fun.

      Thanks for the comment

  3. Nice shooting, Walt. Amazing what a difference very minute changes can make. An RSO at the range pointed out the trigger reset to me about a month ago, that alone made a big difference for me.

    1. Tim,
I’m working on the trigger reset. I can’t hit it quickly (I tend to blow right past it) so I’m exaggerating it now and intend to quicken the pace as I learn where it is.

Thanks for watching and leaving a comment
