2014 PFATA Indoor State Championship at Stowe Archers

The weather this month has been rough, to say the least. As a result, I haven’t had the opportunity to take my Elite Pulse out of its bow case since the January Indoor 3D Shoot at Stowe Archers. I’ve been chomping at the bit to attend another shoot and it looks like I may get that opportunity this weekend.

A few days ago I received a message from Troy Ross, President at Hamburg Game Association, directing my attention to the 2014 PFATA Indoor State Championship being held at Stowe Archers on February 21st through the 23rd.

Six months ago I would have had very little interest in shooting a spot tournament but I have developed a fondness for the sport. I’m not familiar with the NFAA 5 Spot Face but I imagine it is similar to the Vegas 3 Spot Face that I’m accustomed too.

The particulars as to how the match is run is where my interest begins to waver. The PFATA indicates that anyone shooting for prizes must be a member of the NFAA, PFATA, or USAA. Guests (Non-Members) are permitted to shoot but their scores are separate and they do not qualify for prizes.

Let’s be honest here, I don’t stand a chance at winning a prize. I haven’t shot my bow in a month and even if I were to have practiced, shooting a high enough score is a long shot. Even so, I like the idea of having my scores incorporated with all other competitors.

The simple solution is to join the organization. My concern is that I’m afraid I won’t put the membership to use. PFATA holds two shoots per year and I don’t know that I’ll be attending very many NFAA Shoots, if any at all.

Even though I doubt I’ll be joining another shooting organization (I’m already a USPSA and IDPA Member – although they are different sports entirely), I’m leaning very heavily towards shooting the 2014 PFATA Indoor State Championship.

The cost of the shoot is $20 and the nicest part of the deal is that competitors are permitted to shoot twice, throwing out the lesser of the two scores. If I can arrange a babysitter, I may shoot both Saturday and Sunday.

  1. It is a difficult choice when selecting which organization to join. I don’t score high enough to place at the national level either, but possibly among the state competitors. Pennsylvania Field And Target Archers, true only have two shoots per year unlike Pennsylvania State Archery Association which has an entire year of organized shoots (4 regional and 4 state tournaments). Their draw back is not being nationally recognized. If you check the past and present board of both you’ll find they are more or less the same people. Stories of why there are two state organization float around, but I look at it as more opportunities to shoot at a competitive level and I support those who give me that choice.
