For the past several weeks I have been slipping away, trying to find quiet moments to read. Things have been stressful at home and these little escapes have done wonders for my mood. Finding time to read a chapter or two on a Saturday afternoon or four or five before going to sleep at night has allowed me to revisit a series that I was very impressed with on my first read through.
I’ve been chipping away at The Way of Kings, followed by Words of Radiance, of the Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson. The writing style isn’t what I normally look for in a fantasy novel – it lacks the grit and grey character aspects that I enjoy so much but the story is wonderful.
Now that I’m finished, I’m eagerly waiting for Book 3 to be released sometime late this year. According to the ticker on the Brandon Sanderson Website, he is roughly 50% complete with the first draft.
Transitioning from one story to the next has always been difficult for me. I’m excited to be moving on to the next novel on my reading list but I’m a bit bummed out to be leaving behind the characters that I’ve become so invested in these past few weeks.
If anyone is looking for a book recommendation, The Way of Kings would be my suggestion (Amazon Affiliate Link). The story has plenty of depth but it is written in such a way that I would consider it PG-13 (suitable for a broad range of readers). Prepare to be reading for a while though, the books comes in at roughly 1,000 pages.
From here I think I’m going to change gears and re-read The First Law by Joe Abercrombie. I enjoyed it the first time around and kind of miss The Bloody Nine.
