Changing Gears on the Archery Front

Most, if not all, hobbies come with a built-in list of pros and cons. Some can be expensive, others can be time-consuming, and most tend to be a little of both. Archery is no different.

A few years ago I decided that I wanted to get back into the sport. I hadn’t shot a bow in years but I was determined to make it happen. I wound up walking into a local archery shop with a few hundred dollars in my pocket and I walked out with a Mission Craze and everything I needed to shoot it.

I shot that bow, and was happy with it, for a little while before I started browsing the classifieds on Archery Talk. I wound up buying a 2011 Elite Pulse and slowly began buying parts to outfit it for Bowhunter Division. I shoot Field, 3D, and Indoor Spots with the Pulse and it has served me well over the years.

This year was going to be my year to upgrade my archery equipment. I’ve had my eye on an Elite E35 for some time now and the new Victory has been very tempting. I’ve been keeping my eye out on Archery Talk and setting a little money aside from time to time.

Before I could buy one, I instead bought my daughter a Bear Cruzer Lite and everything she would need to shoot it. She loves that bow and it was money well spent. As I began saving again, I continued to keep an eye out on the classifieds. Then I went out and bought my wife a Diamond Edge SB-1 so that we would shoot as a family. My wife was pleased and again, it was money well spent.

As Christmas draws near, I realized that a new bow before the end of the year was probably not going to happen. Instead of waiting until after Christmas, I began to weigh my options. If I were to buy another bow, I’d also need to buy all of the accessories that go with it – I didn’t want to cannibalize the Pulse, after all.

I’ve since changed gears. Rather than buy another bow and rush to get it setup in time for Indoor Leagues, I instead focused on breathing new life into the Pulse. It is in need of new strings and cables, my sight could use an update, and I’ve never really had a set of solid stabilizers.

The process of burning through my fun money has started and packages should arrive on my doorstep shortly. Initially, the thought of passing on a bow again was a little disappointing – now I’m actually pretty excited about re-outfitting and tuning the Pulse.
