Television Addiction: Dexter – Season 1

Dexter - Season 1As I sit here staring at a blank word processor, I fight the urge to try and rub the sandy texture out of my eyes. I found myself glued to the television last night and didn’t get to bed until much later than usual. I’ve become engrossed by a television show and kept telling myself “just one more episode then I’ll go to bed”.

The show that has grabbed such a hold on me is Dexter. It is a Showtime original series that has been on the air for a couple of years. Not being a Showtime subscriber, I wasn’t familiar with it. In truth, whenever I heard a passing mention of the show I thought people were talking about the cartoon man with his tie bent up towards his face (Dilbert).

My wife and I recently subscribed to NetflixOpens in a new tab.. One of the selling points for me was the ability to sream a portion of their content. Not only is it available via computer, videos can also be streamed over our Nintendo Wii, which we have in the living room.

Over the weekend I sat down with the intention of killing a little time while my wife and daughter slept. After hitting all of my usual blogs and websites, I headed over to Netflix to see what was available. In the Television Series section I came across Seasons 1 and 2 of Dexter.

After reading the show description I added it to my Instant Queue and started watching. When the first episode ended, I was blown away. I frowned at first to the CSI like forensic premise but the serial killer part of the plot hooked me.

Sitting down for one episode turned into three. Later that afternoon I snuck in a couple of more while watching my daughter. Yesterday I worked in a couple of more before getting my day underway. When I returned home in the evening, I attempted to squeeze in one more before winding down for the night. That one episode turned into three before I forced myself to turn off the television and head to bed.

Before the week is out, I expect to be finished with Season 1 and be part way through Season 2. All in all, I think Dexter is absolutely fantastic. If you are into scientific shows with a sinister twist, I think Dexter just might be something you’ll want to check out.

What are your

  1. Walt,

Dexter is truly a great show, in fact THE best show on TV right now. I’m glad you discovered it. I began watching it on Showtime from episode one and I was hooked. It is really a well written show. It’s an odd thing but you find yourself rooting for this serial killer. He’s written as such a likeable character and yet so seriously flawed, but the writers balance that perfectly, and in the end you WANT this guy to get his man (or woman). I think you’ll really love season one.

For me season two was just as good as season one. It delves even deeper into how hard it is to keep his life a secret. Season three for me was not as good as the first two seasons, but it was still interesting. Season four was the best season yet IMO. The season finale in season four was one of the best episodes in the series.

I hope you continue to watch. I am excited for Season five which starts next month. From the trailers it looks like another fantastic season. Thanks for this post, it has made me want to go back and watch the series from the beginning.

  2. I’ve never actually seen it, but from what I’ve heard I’m not surprised you like it. When I was reading Random by Craig Robertson I tweeted something along the lines of ‘Am feeling worried I’m liking and understanding a serial killer’ one of my followers presumed I meant I’d been watching Dexter. Always meant to check it out after that, but never got round to it. Maybe I should.
