USPSA Classified

This shooting season I had one goal that was more important than all the others. It was a simple goal, actually. All I wanted was to get a USPSA Classification so that I could determine a base line for future goals.

To become classified in USPSA you need to shoot at least four classifier stages. The courses of fire are pretty straightforward and used to measure the shooters score against a stage that was uniform across the country.

I picked up a classifier stage here and there and was beginning to worry about getting enough on my record to meet the requirements. It wasn’t until November, when I shot a special classifier match at York, that I made the cut and the long wait of score submission and automated classifications began.

The scores didn’t make it in time to get a ranking in December. January was looking grim up until about two weeks ago when the York scores were on the proverbial books. Once I knew I was going to make the next classification cycle, I began to cross my fingers and hope for C Class in Production Division.

Comparing scores during the later part of the season, I was in the middle of the pack as far as rankings amongst the C Class shooters go. I knew that D Class was very likely but I kept my fingers crossed anyway.

When the scores came out on Saturday, I was ecstatic to see that I came in just inside C Class with an average of 44.50% (C Class is 40% to 60%). Before the scores came in my goal was going to be to strive for the next classification. Now that I see where I came in, I think that hitting B Class by next season might be setting the bar too high.

My goal for this season is to average the Top 50% at club matches. This new goal is a little ambitious. It means coming in the better half of an entire division, B, A, Master, and Gran Master Class Shooters tipping the scales against me, depending on who shows up to shoot.

There are a couple of things that will help balance things out. Over the off-season I became part of a shooting team consisting of three other guys I’ve spent the last few months shooting with. As a collective, we will be helping one another shoot better.

To my complete amazement, after organizing our team, we met up with Troy and Missy Dando of Custom Gun Finishes, who have decided to sponsor us. Not only are they offering us emergency service (We were told to call them 24/7 if our guns go down and they will get them back up and running for our next match), they are also easing the financial impact or attending matches and feeding our pistols.

This season will be a challenge but I can’t wait to get back to shooting.
