Discussion Topic

Over the weekend I made the decision to shoot the July USPSA match at Lower Providence Rod and Gun Club. I went into the match expecting it to be hot and thought I prepared adequately. What I didn’t know was that my estimate of how much water I would need was grossly low and that the high for the day would top out at 109 degrees.

As a result of that rather hot range session, I share some of the things I have learned about spending a day on the range, under the hot summer sun.

  1. Hey there, Walt! Great tips for shooting in hit weather. On the day you shot your USPSA match, I shot the PA State Steel Challenge Championships. (I shot poorly, but I cannot contribute that entirely to the heat).

One thing that I felt was a Godsend was my home made shooting cart. This was the first time I had use it and I loved it. I had found a used jogging stroller Salvation Army for $10. I stripped off the seat and canopy and left the bag holder on the bottom. I ordered a pair of V shaped gun holders on eBay for $30 and fashioned a small ledge on the bottom. This now holds my range bag and also my carbine when I shoot that at a match.
It was so hot at York IWLA on Saturday that just the idea of lugging around my gear, gun, ammo AND carbine just sounded awful. But with my cart…..I could also bring along a cooler with drinks and a towel to cleanup with, etc. I also saw a guy who had fashioned a fishing rod holder into his cart to hold an umbrella so he could “bring along his own shade”. Ingenuity at its best!

I may not use the cart I built every match…..but I can assure you it was an extremely useful tool at this match.

    Take care!
    John
