Ask The Audience:

How I Chose to Raise My Children from PAFOAOpens in a new tab.

In this forum post we have a father of three explaining how he raised his children to be responsible with firearms. He has a son who is coming of age (5 years old) and will begin learning about firearms shortly.

His two other children, 9 and 12, were introduced to firearms at 5 years old. When his oldest daughter was 9 (the now 12 year old), he purchased her a 9mm Pistol and Holster of her own. She argued the point that it was her pistol and her responsibility, therefore she should be able to carry it.

The father agreed, with the stipulation that it was only to be carried (loaded) under the supervision of himself or their mother. The youngest daughter (now 9 years old) was granted the same responsibility.

After some concerns were made about the children being too immature to carry a loaded gun at 9 years old, the fathers explains their rural lifestyle. He explains that the farm equipment the children are exposed to is more dangerous than the firearm. He also explains what he expects of his children. For instance, if they decide they want chicken for dinner, they need to make sure they have enough time to slaughter and pluck the chicken before dinnertime.

For my first ‘Ask The Audience’ question, I’d like to know how you feel about children carrying a loaded gun. Is there an age when it becomes appropriate, and if so, what is that age? Does the lifestyle of this family change your feelings towards the situation?

  1. As always Walt great show. the new Holster looks a lot like the Supertuck what does the back look like does it have a combat cut?

    1. Corey,
The black is finished, much like the front. It is dyed black and smooth. This is a “Combat Edition” and has the equivalent of what Crossbreed would call the combat cut (The Combat Edition also come with a slightly more agressive angle)

  2. Thanks for the kind words for the Squirrel Report!

Yeah I was in a tent in Vermont that week so I wasn’t around. I was on for last week, and will be likely on for this week.

    Isn’t Miguel a hoot?

I don’t have kids myself, but I suspect any kid who shows rock-solid responsibility and rules following could be trusted with a gun if you know for sure they won’t do dumb things like shoot stuff they aren’t allowed to, or shoot unsafely, or show it off to people inappropriately.

I grew up in Maine and I know many a farm boy or girl who were ENCOURAGED to take out their .22 rifles or shotguns into the fields to shoot pests like woodchucks who’s holes endanger livestock.

From my understanding they were first only allowed to use firearms under strict supervision, then lesser supervision (like Dad would be working in the field and kid would be shooting) until they were 100% vetted then it was simply “I’m going out shooting” “OK be back in time for dinner”.

Not only is it fun and teaches good responsibility and citizenship, but it also keeps the pests down.

  3. Hi Walt,

I’m like that rural kid that Weer’d Beard was talking about. Where I grew up was found by turning off the paved road, and my neighbors back home have a 600 some odd acre farm and the owner would pay me a buck or two for every groundhog I’d kill because his horses would injure their legs if they found a hole while running around.

I’ve been around guns my whole life and started shooting a BB gun and 22 LR before I even started kindergarten, but always while my Dad was around. When I hit the age of 9-10, I gained enough experience and trust that I was allowed to just go plinking on my own.

I suppose geographic location and the maturity of the child are the main factors to consider. First of all, no matter the age of the child, I’d say they would have to prove their mature enough to understand safety and the dire consequences of carelessness of a gun before being allowed unsupervised access to the gun. Second, where you are would play another big part in deciding whether to let your child carry a gun… a rural countryside is way different than even a small town, and a big city would certainly raise some eyebrows (and even possibly result in Johnny Law paying you a visit in today’s society).

I don’t have kids, but those are the two things I’d consider before allowing my kid to have unattended access to a gun. As for attended access, I’d say the only big deal would be how quickly the child matures (mentally) since some kids “grow up” faster than others… heck, I’ve seen 30 year olds that probably shouldn’t be handling weapons. Just last weekend, a co-worker and I were at a local shooting club and the dip shit swept the muzzle of his pistol across my body. Even though I knew the gun was unloaded (I watched him unload it), I still let him have it. I doubt I’ll ever go shooting with him again since he acted as if there was nothing wrong with what he did.

  4. Hi Walt
I also just received a concealment solutions black mamba holster. Mine is the combat cut with the horsehide upgrade. I have also had the problem of it being very “squeaky” while wearing it. Recently I have been puting some Pecard Leather Dressing on between the belt clip and the leather of the holster, and that has stopped the noise. I have been wearing the holster every day for a couple of weeks and it is a very comfortable High Quality product!

    1. Bob,
Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll have to track some of that down and give it a try. Aside form the squeak, I love the holster. If I could scrape together a few bucks, I might even order myself one of his Sidewinder OWB Holsters to go along with the Black Mamba.
