If you ride back roads in Berks County long enough you’re going to come across a small metal sign that says Dale Ironworks. I’ve seen that sign more times than I can count and every single time I’ve gone looking for whatever it was pointing to. Dale Ironworks felt like it had to be out there somewhere. Old iron furnaces don’t just disappear, right?
Turns out they kind of do.
After three or four rides where I turned down every back road I could find and came up empty, I finally did a proper deep dive online. I eventually stumbled on a comment thread from someone who’d had the exact same experience as me. They’d seen the sign, gone looking, found nothing. Someone from the area replied and explained it. The building was gone. Demolished or just fell apart over the years. The sign is still standing out there pointing toward something that doesn’t exist anymore. I’ll admit that was a little deflating. I like riding out to explore old places and this one had been on my list for a while.

Riding Back to the Scene
Even knowing the building was gone I found myself back out on those roads anyway because honestly they’re just good roads to ride. I came down Huff’s Church Road and Dairy Lane, mixed in a stretch of Conrad Road because I like that one better than the Dale road itself, and wound through some of the back end of the county where the roads get narrower and the scenery gets better.
Quick note though: a lot of these roads are oil and chip. The road conditions can be rough and unpredictable in spots. It keeps me honest on the throttle back here and I’m always a little more alert. Worth knowing before you head out if you’re on a sportier setup.
The Stone Marker
So here’s the part I didn’t expect. I was coming back down one of these roads when I spotted a big stone marker on the side that said something along the lines of Dale Forge. I turned around immediately. The ground was soft, no real place to park, and the property is private but I got close enough to read it. Dale Forge. Dale Ironworks. Hereford Furnace. All the same place.
The building is completely gone. There’s an old dilapidated structure nearby but what stood there has been torn down. The creek winds through, the trees close in around the spot, and the scenery is actually really pretty in a wooded, quiet sort of way. But the ironworks itself? Just that stone marker and whatever’s left standing in the background that I wasn’t about to trespass to get a closer look at.
It was still worth stopping. After all those rides trying to find the place I at least got to stand in the spot where it used to be.
One More Thing: The Butterfly Rock
On my way back out I spotted something sitting near the road. Turned out to be a painted rock with a Lehigh Valley Rocks reference. I’ve seen these pop up on Facebook before. People paint rocks and leave them around for others to find. I picked it up to bring home for my daughter or maybe just leave it on my desk next to the other riding keepsake I picked up a while back.
Small moment. Made a weird, disjointed day of riding feel a little more complete.
About Those Roads
The scenery back in this area is genuinely good. There’s a creek that cuts in and out of the tree line along a couple of these routes and when the light is right it’s a pretty spot to ride through. The problem is the road surfaces. Oil and chip, rough edges, unpredictable conditions at times. I’ve also come around a bend back here and had something explode out of the road that I can only describe as a pterodactyl taking flight. Somebody commented on the photo I posted and told me what it was. I don’t remember what they said. Big. Startling. That’s all I’ve got.
The sign for Dale Ironworks is still out there by the way. If you come down this stretch you’ll see it right at a stop sign on the left. That’s the thing that started all of this and it’s still standing there pointing toward a history that mostly doesn’t exist anymore.
