Look at them girls with the daisy dukes on

Just the other day I received the new Front Sight Magazine (Vol. 29 – No. 4) from USPSA. One of my favorite sections to read, and typically what I read as I’m walking from my mailbox back to my house, is the Members Mailbag. It is basically a letter to the editor section where members can ask questions or voice their opinions.

In the latest issue there was a submission that made me raise an eyebrow and think back to every match I’ve ever shot with women in attendance. The heading of this submission read “Draw The Line! No Short Shorts!” I am a 29 year old man and, like most men, I enjoy taking in the sights of an attractive woman. If there was ever a woman wearing daisy dukes at one of the matches I’ve shot, trust me when I say that I would have noticed.

My experience in this sport is limited and I’ve never attended a major match, but I think this particular letter adresses a problem that may not exist.

In this letter, the author mentions spouses picking up Front Sight Magazine and seeing women dressed inappropriately. I can’t seem to find my copy of Vol. 29 No. 3, but Vol. 29 No. 1 & 2, as well as the issue this letter was featured in, is lacking anything I would consider inappropriate.

The author also mentions YouTube, so I pulled up the Women of USPSAOpens in a new tab. Nationals 2011 Video Montage (which can be viewed at the top of this post). Much like Front Sight Magazine, there was nothing I would consider inappropriate there either. Sexy, absolutely. Inappropriately dressed, no.

As a new and overprotective father, I don’t see anything in either the magazine or video that I would object to my daughter wearing if and or when she gets into the shooting sports.

As I’ve already stated above, my experience with USPSA is limited. July will be my one year anniversary to the shooting sport. That said, I’ve never been to anything larger than a club level match. There certainly could be women that shoot in daisy dukes and revealing tank tops, but I have never seen it. If there are a few women that are inappropriately dressed at sanctioned matches, perhaps those women should be adressed individually rather than calling attention to a problem, that many members aren’t seeing, in the organizations regular publication.
