Riding Pennsylvania Backroads: A Day I Didn’t Plan

Sometimes a short ride turns into something longer. That’s kind of the whole story here, and honestly, I’m not sorry about it.

I slipped out on a nice day to explore some Pennsylvania backroads with no real agenda, ended up at the Daniel Boone Homestead in Berks County, walked around for a bit, and just took in the scenery. It’s a solid little stop if you’re ever riding through that part of the state – history, open space, quiet. Worth a wander.

What I didn’t plan on was spending about an hour out there and having to cross my fingers the whole ride home that my wife wouldn’t notice how “short” that short ride turned out to be.

The Parking Lot Moment

Before I could even get back on the bike, I had to survive recording a talking-head segment in a parking lot with an audience.

I’m walking back down the trail, I get to my motorcycle, and there’s a car pulled up close with the window down. Just sitting there. I’m standing next to my bike thinking I must have done something wrong – broken some rule I didn’t know about, parked in the wrong spot, something.

Turns out the guy was just waiting for his wife to finish walking the dog. They hopped in the car and left. Completely uneventful.

But it meant I had to record my outro twice, because I’m not the guy who can just hit record with strangers watching. Never have been. I’ve seen other moto vloggers do it in busy public spaces without flinching – I genuinely don’t know how they pull that off. Stage fright in a parking lot is real, and I’m apparently not over it.

What I’ve Been Watching During Downtime

Since this moto vlog didn’t exactly have a tight agenda, I’ll tell you what’s been on my screen lately.

Dewey Rides

I’ve been chipping away at Dewey’s 123-video PanAmerica series for a while now. Last I checked I had about 20 videos left, and I watched a few more the morning of this ride. When I paused, he had just met up with a friend in Mexico – someone who helped him out when his bike was stolen. I’m close to the end and I’m going to be a little lost when it’s done. That series is just easy to follow because it was documented in order, over two-plus years. You’re not jumping around trying to figure out where he is or what happened last.

I don’t know what I’m binging next when that wraps up.

Spaghetti Weston (Weston Super Moto Vlog)

Phil puts out a video, I watch it. That’s just how it goes. Something about watching someone ride around the UK that I find genuinely enjoyable. Low effort to watch, always worth the time.

Moto Ramblings (Patrick)

I’ve got a backlog of Patrick’s stuff to catch up on. Got the full story on what’s been going on with his channel at our winter lunch meetup – more on that in a second – and it sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole.

Another one I’ve fallen way behind on. Being off YouTube for a stretch really piles up the unwatched videos fast.

The Discord Lunch Meetup (and Patrick’s Channel Situation)

Every winter, a bunch of guys from the WaltInPA Discord server get together for a lunch meetup. We drive – it’s winter, nobody’s riding – and a lot of us bring our wives. It’s a good way to put a real face to the usernames, and it helps when I tell my wife I’m going for a ride with “Goofy” that she’s actually met the guy and his wife. That first conversation a few years ago – “Hey, I’m going riding with this guy who calls himself Goofy Bastard, we’re meeting in a parking lot, I don’t know him” – that was a harder sell.

At the meetup, I was catching up with Goofy and he mentioned he’d had a phone call with Patrick from Moto Ramblings. Patrick had been having a rough go with YouTube – he’d hit all the thresholds for monetization (1,000 subscribers, 4,000 watch hours) but Google AdSense kept denying his application without giving him a reason. No explanation, just no.

He ended up creating a new channel, moved all his videos over, then decided to go back to the original. That’s a massive amount of work for a conclusion that probably should have been the starting point, but I get it – when you’re frustrated and not getting answers, you feel like you have to do something. I think sticking with the established channel was the right call in the end.

And for what it’s worth, monetization isn’t the money machine people think it is. My channel has close to 1,900 subscribers. In my best month ever, I made about 80 bucks. Right now I’m looking at maybe 20. It’s gas money, and that’s about it. The real value in hitting that threshold is more about the milestone than the check. If you actually want to make something from a YouTube channel, you’re probably better off with affiliate links, working directly with a dealer or retailer, or selling flat rate sponsorships yourself.

Wrapping It Up

That’s the ride. Nothing dramatic, nothing planned, just a good afternoon on some Pennsylvania backroads that ran a little longer than I told my wife it would.
