Shooting The Breeze Podcast: Episode 17

Oliva Serie O and Fobus Holster - 1

This weeks Episode of Shooting The Breeze was both fun and hectic. As it has been the case for the last several weeks, I found myself sitting down to record the episode without a full set of show notes in front of me. Thanks to Joe from TwitterOpens in a new tab., I was given an idea for a last minute featured discussion topic, which I was able to use to finalize my show notes.

The episode runs about 52 minutes in length and is available in both video and audio formats. Once finished with the show, please feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments section down below. I would also appreciate your using the social share buttons, at the foot of the post, to help spread the word.

  1. Hey walt , the range officer training is in january in old bridge NJ check out the USPSA website for more details. I am curious about shooting an IDPA match and you seem to be too and we have to do at least one next season so you can see me get DQed for not following there stage procedure:) The biggest reservation I have with IDPA is the lack of freedom , how fun would USPSA be if they told you how to shoot it? How would you be panicky during RO training? If you are a panicky person you sure do hide it real well:) The score keeper is also an RO and is watching feet and trigger finger from the other side of the shooter. I have full faith that you would be a very good RO , even if you don’t take the class start scoring for awhile next season and then take it. Drop me an email if you want to shoot this weekend at topton. Good video man:)

    1. Scott,
Of all the places to take an RO Seminar, it has to be held in New Jersey. Do you think there is any way of getting one of the local clubs to schedule a seminar (Lower Providence or Topton)? When you attended the seminar, was there a fee involved?

I might be free one day next weekend but I’m not sure which it will be just yet. I’m trying to get out to the Poconos to visit a friend of mine.

Thanks for checking out the video.

      1. Took mine at Lower prov and it cost me $40 and was a whole weekend. Asked ted at lower prov if was doing one next year and he said no. Mabye later next year there will be a closer class. Southern chester might be an option for trying to get them to run a class.

        1. Scott,
I came across some information meant for hosting clubs. I don’t understand how it works but it appears as though there may be an $800 fee for the class (paid by the club, to cover travel and lodging expenses for the the instructor) with a 20 Person Minimum.

I can understand local clubs not wanting to run the seminars too often. I don’t mind paying a $40 fee to take the class (I think it is definitely worth it) but I just wish there was something closer.

I checked on Old Bridge and it is 2.5 hours away. Unless I get a room and stay in the area overnight, that is 5 hours of driving (to and from the event) each day (2 day seminar). By the time I figure gas cost, possible hotel costs, and the fee for the class, it is just too expensive.

I’ll just keep an eye out for a class being held locally and spend more time with the score sheet in my hand next season.

    1. Jennifer,
It was my pleasure. I enjoyed reading your post and was happy to pass it along. Thanks for checking out the podcast and leaving a comment, I appreciate it.

  2. Hey Walt,

Thanks for another mention in your show. You are doing well and I am continuing to enjoy your show. I am finding that I really like the laid-back, conversational pace your show has.

When you had the rusted slide and called S&W, were they treating that as a warranty issue or was it just purely exceptional customer service? So many product manufacturers out there (not specifically gun industry) are quick to tell people to go pound sand (get some wd-40 and get rid of the rust yourself!) – was good to hear S&W did what they did.

Regarding your Dunkin Donuts K-Cups, can you only get those at Dunkin or are they available elsewhere?

    1. JP,
I’m glad you enjoy the show. I always have a good time recording it and it is great to hear that people like the laid back feel.

Smith & Wesson was great when it came to handeling my customer service call. The rep apologized about the issue and explained that my gun was part of a bad batch (apparently the finish wasn’t baked properly) and they took care of the issue.

Smith & Wesson covered shipping both ways. All I had to do was drop the gun into a box and arrange for FedEx to pick it up. My customer service experience was another reason why I purchased a Bodyguard. I felt that if I ever had a problem with the pistol, Smith & Wesson would make things right.

Regarding the K-Cups, you should be able to get them anywhere. I think my wife picked up the last box while doing some shopping at Walmart. If you prefer online ordering, you can get them from Amazon.

Thanks for checking out the episode and leaving a comment.

  3. Just wanted to say thanks for going over your gear. Good show
Also if you ever trying to pick a cigar to smoke LA AROMA DE CUBA new blend.
I don’t believe it is on stogie review ether but I could be wrong.

    1. Joe,
I’m glad I could help. Are you getting into shooting competitively or just looking around at different holster options?

Coincidentally, I just had a Don Pepin Garcia made La Aroma De Cuba just the other day (I picked one up while hanging out with @czerbe at a local cigar shop). I used to enjoy the old blend bu I think the newer ones are even better.

      Thanks for the support

  4. Walt
I would say more of just getting options as I just got my first pistol. I have looked into clubs and I might try that out. I just wish they were a little closer to home.

    1. Joe,
I know what you mean. There are a couple of clubs in my general area. The closest one is about 30 minutes away but they don’t always have pistol shoots each month. The other three clubs, that do have a monthly pistol match, are an hour or more away.

Let me know what you wind up getting for a holster and if you give competitive shooting a try. I’d like to hear your thoughts on both subjects.

  5. Great episode, love the story of the 11yr old child defending his mother with a BB rifle. Nice to see the holsters for the M&P and Mags. Hope you find a solution on getting the rust off, maybe a little WD-40 and then use some Ballistol cleaner / lube / protector. Congrats on podcast #17. Looking forward to the future shows.

    1. You’ve mentioned Ballistol on Twitter. It sounds like you really like the stuff, I should break down and order some to give it a try.

Thanks for checking out the podcast and leaving a comment.
