South Perkasie Covered Bridge and a Pennsylvania Group Ride Worth Remembering

Some Sundays just come together the right way. What started as a solo Chester County covered bridge tour wrapped up as a full group ride through some of Pennsylvania’s best back roads, a stop at the South Perkasie Covered Bridge, and lunch with good people. It was one of those days you want to bottle up and save for winter.

Wrapping Up the Covered Bridge Series

Before the group even came into the picture, I spent the morning finishing up the third and final video in my Chester County covered bridges series just outside of Phoenixville. The route took me to Kennedy Covered Bridge, then Rapp’s Dam Covered Bridge, and finally Sheeder-Hall Covered Bridge to close things out. If you have been following along with that series, thank you. It was a fun one to put together, and Chester County does not disappoint when it comes to back road riding.

With the series officially in the books, it was time to point the bike toward Route 401 and meet up with the crew.

Linking Up with the Group

We met up at a Wawa on Route 401, which if you ride in this area you already know is a perfectly acceptable meeting spot. TrekkieMoto was there, along with AluMaya, who I was meeting for the very first time.

I have said it before and I will say it again, group riding is my favorite form of riding. That might sound strange coming from someone who does mostly solo moto vlogs, but it is the truth. When you ride by yourself, the camera becomes a kind of therapist. You talk through whatever is on your mind, and there is something genuinely enjoyable about that. But when the crew is together, there is a whole different energy. The banter over the comms, pointing things out to each other along the way, the shared experience of just rolling down a good road with good people. It is hard to beat.

This time around I was perfectly happy to sit at the back of the pack and let TrekkieMoto lead. No navigation, no decision making, just riding and taking in the scenery. Exactly what I needed.

A Stop at South Perkasie Covered Bridge

One of the highlights of the day was rolling out to the South Perkasie Covered Bridge. This was not a surprise stop for me since I have been out there a number of times before, but I was to see it again and get off the bikes for a few minutes.

The bridge has had a rough go of it lately. A hurricane a couple of years back sent serious flooding through the park where the bridge had been relocated for preservation. It was no longer positioned over water at that point, just sitting in the park as a historical landmark for visitors to walk across. The floodwaters had other plans. The bridge was lifted right off its frame and left in a state of disrepair. From what I understand, the borough has arrangements in place to get it repaired and is currently waiting on federal funding to move things forward. It is always a little tough to see a piece of history in that condition, but knowing that the repair is planned makes it easier to stomach. Worth stopping to see regardless, and hopefully next time I bring people out there it will be back in better shape.

Lunch and a Long Loop Home

After making our way back down toward the Phoenixville area, we wrapped up the day with lunch at Liberty Union over in Kimberton. The route had taken us all the way up to the Perkiomen area to meet up with Oldsman and then looped us back down, which also gave us a shot at crossing paths with GoofyOpens in a new tab.. He got out of his prior commitment later than expected and we just could not make the timing work. It happens. There are going to be plenty of group rides throughout the summer and we will get him out there.

Big thank you to TrekkieMoto for picking up lunch. Completely unexpected and very much appreciated. It was a pleasure getting to see Oldsman again. And it was great finally getting to ride with AluMaya for the first time. Good people all around.

Walt

My name is Walt White and I've been riding motorcycles on and off since my early twenties. After more than a decade away from the sport, I came back - and I've been making up for lost time ever since. Based in Southeast Pennsylvania, I write and create videos about real motorcycle ownership: the bikes I ride, the gear I test, the roads I explore, and the community I've found along the way. I ride a 2022 Yamaha MT-09 SP and a 2023 Kawasaki Ninja 400, and I try to give you the honest take you'd get from a friend rather than a press release. I'm also a husband, dad to three girls, and a pitbull owner - which keeps life interesting off the bike too.
