A couple of weeks ago I announced here on Walt In PA that I would be participating in National Novel Writing Month. That day has come and here I sit at the end of day one. I must say, this is much harder than I anticipated. Aside from being a little rusty in the creative writing front, I’m finding that my past creative writing is a bit counter productive in a sense.
When I first started posting flash fiction here on my blog, I was striving to prune down my word count to make the stories a little more concise and easier to read. I went from pushing one-thousand words per flash to about five hundred in my later writings. I now have a goal of at least fifty-thousand words and each installment I sit down to write is topping the scales at five-hunded words.
I’ve spend a couple of writing sessions roughing out a chunk of story, then going back and filling in the details later in the day. It is a system that seems to be working for me, but it results in a fair bit of re-writing, which that is hurting my bottom line. Given a bit of time I’m sure I’ll hit my stride and work out a system that wastes less words.
As it stands, I am closing out day one with a word count of 1,807. It feels good to be back to creative writing and I am excited to revisit the world of Memoirs of an Assassin. As far as writing goes, I’m feeling a bit drained so pardon the short blog post. I’m going to try and do regular updates on my progress in an effort to stay motivated and go through a bit of a cool down phase at the end of each day.

Have you ever written a novel before??
Thanks.
No, have never written a novel before. I’ve done a ~2,000 word article for a print magazine, and a few other informational writings, but this is a new experience for me.
