New Rider Milestones – 500 Miles on my Honda CB650F

Back on June 2nd (2020), I took ownership of my 2018 Honda CB650F from Martin Moto. I’ve been enjoying the bike immensely and just love slipping out for an hour, here and there, to take a little ride. In the beginning my rides started off short – close to home and many (many) laps around local developments. It was a great way to get a feel for riding again after being away for ten years. As my comfort level grew, so did my riding radius.

Just the other day I pulled up the mileage on my odometer and realized that I nearly missed a very significant New Rider Milestone. At that point I had put 488 Miles on my bike in the first month that I owned it. Being a touch OCD about certain things, I couldn’t close out the month so close to the 500 Mile Mark – so I hopped on the bike to finish strong. I didn’t have to go far and it was the middle of a hot day, so I stuck to country roads around town and focused on getting the twelve miles in while enjoying the solitude.

I feel like I’ve learned a lot over the past 500 Miles – one of the more important things is that riding a motorcycle is very therapeutic. I’m amazed at how I can be stressed over work and just a couple of miles on the bike melts is all away. I forget all about that fast-approaching deadline or that annoying co-worker and just enjoy the moment.

It’s been an excellent first 500 Miles and I’m looking forward to many, many more on my Honda CB650F

  1. Been awful quiet here, Walt. Hope you haven’t had a “mishap.”

My daily commute is exactly 1.9 miles one-way. I only use my Goldwing for commuting in warm weather, because getting dressed in all my cold weather gear to take it all off a few minutes later is a waste.

My afternoon commute is purposely longer for the therapeutic reasons like you. I will go out for 25-40 miles before heading home, sometimes grabbing supper while I am out. With the warm, dry weather we have been having I have been doing a lot of riding. I hooked up with several locals (one is a brand new rider) and we gently took him out of his “comfort zone” last Saturday for about a 65 mile ride. He was happy riding in the middle of the pack, and got a good dose of different road/traffic conditions without ever being nervous. I also ride with an experienced group that rides much more aggressively on longer road trips. Then there is the whole Patriot Guard thing, where I was part of the funeral procession as motorcycle escort. Looking forward to the fall riding season which can’t be beat here in New England.

    1. No mishaps – I’ve just been terrible at keeping up with the Blog. I’ve been spending quite a bit of time on YouTube and need to do a better job of tying it all together.

Ever since the Pandemic, I’ve been working remotely full time (so no commuting for me). The one benefit is that I’ve been able to slip out here and there for rides over my lunch break. Depending on how long of a lunch I take, I can pretty easily get in 20-30 miles comfortably. I’ve been spending a bit more time on the bike over the weekends – I think my longest ride was about 70 miles (loop).

I’d really like to hook up with a couple of local riders to expand my horizons a bit.
It sounds like you’ve been keeping busy!
