Cardo vs Sena Communicator: Why My Group Is Switching

I was on my way home from Martin MotoOpens in a new tab., fresh off picking up a pair of Noru leather riding gloves for thirty bucks, when my brain wandered to something that’s been sitting in the back of my head for a while now. The Cardo vs Sena communicator situation in my riding group. It’s been a slow-moving thing, but it’s getting to the point where I can’t ignore it anymore.

Where My Group Started

For a long time, we were a Sena group. I personally run the Sena 50SOpens in a new tab., and I actually have two of them. The second one started as a backup and also gave me a way to record both sides of a conversation for video content. In practice, I rarely used it for either. So it just became an expensive unit sitting in a drawer. But we were all on Sena, and it worked fine.

Then guys started switching.

One of the guys got a Cardo for Christmas. His son picked one up too. Those two ride together constantly, so it made sense for them to be on the same system. Now one of their friends is looking at Cardo as well. And when we all ride together, it gets messy. That’s kind of how this whole thing started gaining momentum in our group.

The Real Problem: Cardo and Sena Don’t Play Well Together

Here’s the thing. You can connect a Cardo and a Sena over Bluetooth. It works. But “works” is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence.

Bluetooth intercom communication is just not in the same league as mesh. On my Sena, I push a button and I’m on Open Mesh. Done. The noise cancellation is solid, the connection is stable, and it’s dead simple to use. I’m genuinely impressed with how well Sena’s mesh network performs.

Bluetooth pairing between different systems is a step backwards from that. And it’s not just a minor inconvenience. It’s noticeably worse.

Now, Cardo has been making a real effort to bridge the gap between their system and Sena. They’ve been working on cross-compatibility. The problem is that every time there’s a fix or an update that gets things working, it seems like Sena breaks it again on their end. I don’t know if that’s intentional or just a side effect of how they manage their ecosystem, but it’s hard not to notice the pattern. It feels like Sena wants to keep the two worlds separate.

And honestly, I get the business logic. But it’s frustrating when you’re out on a group ride and half the group is fumbling with connections.

Why I Haven’t Switched Yet

I still have two 50S units. Sena’s mesh is genuinely good. And I can’t quite bring myself to drop $400 on a Cardo Pactalk EdgeOpens in a new tab. right now when I already have a system that works.

So my plan is to keep an eye on Facebook Marketplace and try to find a Cardo at a reasonable price. That way I’d have one of each, which would also come in handy for the channel. Being able to test both systems side by side is something I’ve wanted to do for a while.

The other piece of this is the Riser Motorcycle AppOpens in a new tab.. Cardo recently acquired Riser and they’re rebranding it as Cardo Ride. The idea, from what I’ve read, is that the app will eventually let you control your Cardo unit and track your rides all in one place. I don’t own a Cardo yet, but that kind of integration is interesting to me. I ran the Riser app on a recent ride just to see where it’s at these days, and I’m thinking about doing a full review on it. More on that in a future post.

The Cardo vs Sena Communicator Question Isn’t Settled for Me Yet

Look, I’m not ready to write Sena off. Their mesh network is excellent and I’ve had good experiences with the 50S. But the reality of riding in a mixed group is pushing me toward making a change, even if it’s a gradual one.

If most of the guys I ride with end up on Cardo, the math changes. Mesh only works its magic when everyone’s on the same system. And if I’m the last one on Sena, I’m the one dealing with a Bluetooth connection every single ride.

I’ll probably land on having both eventually. One for the group rides, one as a backup or for content. We’ll see how the Facebook Marketplace search goes.

After more than a decade away from the sport, I came back - and I've been making up for lost time ever since. Based in Southeast Pennsylvania, I write and create videos about real motorcycle ownership: the bikes I ride, the gear I test, the roads I explore, and the community I've found along the way. I ride a 2022 Yamaha MT-09 SP and a 2023 Kawasaki Ninja 400, and I try to give you the honest take you'd get from a friend rather than a press release. I'm also a husband, dad to three girls, and a pitbull owner - which keeps life interesting off the bike too.
