Cracking Open The First Book of Demon Cycle

Peter Brett - The Warded Man - Demon Cycle Book 1

It has been a long time since I’ve posted anything about books on this blog. At one time, I had to be pried away from my books. I would spend every spare minute I could find with my nose in a book. These days, I’m finding less and less time for reading. I find that a little sad and need to make an effort to read more.

When it comes to reading, I’m a big fan of fantasy. I’ve read other genres, and while I’ve read some enjoyable books, I always find myself right back to fantasy. Being brought into a new world, ripe with magic and mayhem, just does it for me.

I have to admit though, I’m a little picky. I don’t care for High Fantasy and get lost in a vast array of races and cultures. I’ll probably draw some heat for this but, I didn’t enjoy The Hobbit and have very little interest in reading Lord of the Rings.

I like my fantasy to be gritty. Dirty, filthy, grey characters are my favorite. For this reason, I’m a sucker for anything Joe Abercrombie writes. The First Law Trilogy was excellent and things got even better with Heros. I didn’t know what to think when I heard Red Country was going to be a Western but, I must admit, it was a fantastic read.

Series with virtually no grit are also enjoyable. Patrick Rothfuss’ Kingkiller Chronicles is one of my favorite series to date (even if it isn’t finished yet). Robin Hobb’s Farseer and Liveship Traders were both fun to read (my interest started waning in Rain Wilds Chronicles).

Due to a severe lack of time these days, I’ve started listening to Audiobooks. I like to listen to books I’ve already read while working at my computer. I’m in the process of listening to Harry Potter and find the audiobooks to be a lot of fun.

The reason I bring up reading is because I recently received a book from my Paperback Swap Wishlish. I’m planning on cracking open The Warded Man by Peter Brett (Book 1 from the Demon Cycle). I don’t know what to expect but I’ve heard good things about the series.

I don’t know where I’ll go after The Warded Man. I have a pretty big stack of Fantasy Novels to read. Over the past twelve months I’ve collected more books than I’ve read. It is about time I get to reading and thin out that stack.

  1. Don’t tell Zena how you feel about “The Lord of the Ring” or “The Hobbit”. She would probably quit shooting with you. I myself like to dive deep in to tech manuals, wire diagrams and ladder schematics. Really by the time I understand those and keep machines running I’m done with reading and just want to go shoot my bow.

  2. I just started Book Five of the Song of Fire and Ice. I’m concerned the HBO series may be burning through the books too quickly. It’s a cable serial so I guess I’d be surprised if it went longer than 5 years at any rate.

    1. I haven’t been reading the books but love the series. I was worried about that too but someone was telling me that future seasons are going to cover about half a book to slow down progression through Martin’s story.
