First Time Shooting Sporting Clays

Remington 870 Wingmaster - 1

In my previous video, One Step Closer to Action Shooting, I talked a little about joining Oley Valley Fish and GameOpens in a new tab.. The night that I arrived to sign up, the club was open to the public for a weekly Sporting Clays event. The turnout was pretty good and everyone seemed to be having a good time. Watching everyone have fun rekindled an old desire to give clay shooting a try.

When the event rolled around again, I borrowed my fathers old Remington 870 Wingmaster and took a trip to the range. Initially I was going to meet up with Shawn so that he could teach me how to shoot, but he had something come up and had to cancel. Eager to give it a try, I headed over solo. Upon arriving I met a young man (Can’t remember his name, he was in his early teens) who would be throwing the clays and got the gist of how things would flow. He offered me some pointers, which I graciously accepted, and got shooting.

I shot miserably, breaking between fifteen and eighteen clays out of fifty. I had difficulty with leading the clays, especially on shots of significant distance. Even though i didn’t shoot very well, I had a great time. The old pump acton shotgun left me with a sore shoulder but I had a grin from ear to ear.

  1. Walt, it has been at least 20 years since I have shot clay’s, even got into reloading, I really enjoyed it,just seemed to gotten away from it,did enjoy your comments about your experience. Good luck next time.

    1. Did you get into reloading for shotgun? To be honest, up until recently I didn’t even know that shotgun reloading was an option (I don’t know anyone that has done it, most reloaders I know reload for Rifle and Pistol).

Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. I’m glad you enjoyed the video

  2. Hello Walt, just got done watching your ”target” video, came back to this one, any way, did my own reloading for about five years, it was fun, and saved me some money. Just got out of shouting, it got to be expensive and just lost interest,it was fun.
