Take a moment to think back to when you made the decision to live a healthier lifestyle. Enough was enough and for whatever reason you wanted to shed some unwanted pounds. When our mind is made up, our body is jolted into action and we begin making changes.
We don’t necessarily think much about a timeframe, we just begin moving in the right direction and hope the scale follows suit. As times go by the blind determination subsides and we feel the need to start analyzing the process.
In my first week I lost 5 pounds. If I keep up this pace I can be down 50 pounds in 10 Weeks! I hate to be the bearer of bad news but weight loss isn’t that easy. The more weight we lose, the harder it becomes to continue shedding the pounds.
The best possible advice that I could give to anyone early in their weight loss journey is that you have to trust the process and be willing to make adjustments. The last time I saw a drop on the scale was August 15th. Being that today is October 1st, that may seem like a rather nasty plateau.
Part of me is concerned that the scale hasn’t moved in over a month. Actually, the scale has gone in the opposite direction and I seem to be hovering anywhere between three and six pounds heavier than my lowest recorded weight. The other part of me says to relax and trust the process. It isn’t always easy but I have to remind myself to look at the bigger picture.
I have my good days and my bad days. Sometimes I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror and feel like a sexy beast. I see muscle definition that didn’t exist before and it is comforting to know that at any given moment I could pick up and run a couple of miles. Less frequently I have my bad days, the times when I see myself and think that I look like a big fat monster.
Exercise is the easy part in all of this. The most difficult aspect is letting go of the lousy self-image you’ve built over the years and accepting the fact that while you may not have your ideal body, you are in far better shape than you were when you began this journey.
