The New Garden is in Full Swing

In GardeningTags Gardening, HealthJuly 7, 20151 Comment Walt

Several months ago my wife and I were discussing a garden at our new home. We scoped out a handful of locations in the yard but never committed because we didn’t want to interfere with space for our daughter to play. When our deck was built, I kicked around the idea of wrapping a portion of it with raised beds for our garden. My wife pointed out that we had several trees in the area and that shade may be …

An Itty-Bitty Garden Update

About this time last week I was telling you all about my brand new garden. It was a lot of work getting the raised beds built, leveled into the ground, filled, and planted, but we’re beginning to see some progress. Because we were a bit late to the party, I opted to purchase a few plants for the garden rather than starting everything from seed. We’ve got four tomato plants, two jalapeno plants, one wonder pepper plant, and nine lettuce …

A New Garden for a New Home

A couple of years ago I got this crazy idea that my family needed a garden. At the time we were eating a lot of fresh produce and it seemed silly to continue buying it from the grocery store when we could simply grow it ourselves. How hard could it be, right? In my mind, the hardest part was going to be locating the raised bed planters so that I could take advantage of the Square Foot Gardening System. We …

Building My Own Wooden Plant Cages

Despite a little snow and lows in the twenties, Spring is here. I’ve spent the last week, or so, prepping our family garden. In a few days, when the temperature rebounds, I’ll begin sowing seeds and transplanting. In the meantime, I’ve been giving a lot of thought to how I would go about supporting plants. Store-bought metal cages are incredibly convenient and store well but the cost is a big deterrent. I tried staking and tying off plants last year …

Spring is Here and it is Glorious!

All winter I’ve been saying that Spring Can’t Get Here Soon Enough. Well, it is here and it is glorious! I spent the entire weekend outside, mostly working in my yard, and was completely content. Garden Update A couple of weeks ago I got an iMessage from Jerry Cruz asking what my plans were for gardening this year. Ever since that initial message, we have been sharing a lot of ideas a photos. The conversations have kept my interest high …

Square Foot Gardening Update

In GardeningMay 10, 2013Leave a comment Walt

A couple of weeks ago I put together a blog post introducing you to my family’s new hobby, Square Foot Gardening. To be honest, I was rather surprised by the feedback I recieved. I mean, for a blog filled with these sort of many-man hobbies of guns, cigars, and booze, I wasn’t expecting much the post to get much traction. Since that post did so well, I thought I would continue to provide updates of our progress. At this point …

Instagram post 2188903448250909365_205973269 When I first heard about the concept of an Infinity Bottle - I knew I had to make one. While putting it together I thought it would be amazing (lots of good whiskey went into the bottle). The finished product is... well, a little weird...

I’m looking forward to tinkering with it and seeing how it evolves over time.

Instagram post 2185999451068158668_205973269 Nice mild night to be out in the deck with a cigar and a little Makers Mark. Also picked up a bottle of Maker’s 46 - I’m curious how they compare.

Instagram post 2174349788267187207_205973269 Back in my youth I remember the occasional shot of Wild Turkey 101 and how rough it was. At least a decade later, pored neat and sipped on, this goes down surprisingly easy. At $25 per bottle I’d say this is definitely one of the more memorable “Budget Bourbons” I’ve had.
