Two weeks ago I was standing in the grass on a beautiful Sunday afternoon as I watched my Sister get married. The service was excellent (and by that I mean short) and the reception was very laid back. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and it was nice to do some catching up with family.
As usual, I wound up spending a lot of time talking to my cousin David. There is only a few years difference in our ages and we have several common interests. One area where David really impresses me is his business sense. He has a good head on his shoulders and seems to do well in building a strong financial foundation for his family.
While I’ve been working for more than half my life, I’ve always been an employee. I’ve never spent much time learning about the ins and outs of business and I know absolutely nothing about investing (I can barely decipher my 401K).
To try and remedy this, I spent a little bit of time talking to David about various podcasts and websites he follows about business and finance. Since then I’ve been bouncing around on the iTunes trying to find something that inspires me.
While going from one podcast to the next, trying to find something that spoke to me, I came to the Entrepreneurs and Coffee Podcast. It was interesting, it was entertaining, and it compelled me to want to do something.
I want to leverage my desire to get healthy to get a podcast off the ground. I realize that being a ‘newbie’ to the fitness world means I’m going to have a very rough road ahead of me but I think that is part of the appeal.
There must be thousands of people just like me. People who become paralyzed by all of the choices and tips on how to go from overweight to healthy. Why not start something from the ground up and invite a small audience to learn with me along the way?
I’ve already determined that getting healthy is a long term goal, why not use the podcast as an accountability system? I could talk about my success, struggles, and failures. I could talk about different fitness products (reviews, perhaps) and workouts. The more I think about it, the more excited I’m becoming!
Off the top of my head I can think of several people that I have a connection with that have a story to tell. Friends who battled cancer and came away stronger and more physically fit than when they received the devastating news. I know people that went from Average Joes to Marathon Runners. If I find their stories compelling, surely an audience will.
I’ll never get rich running a podcast but perhaps with time it will become self sustaining. Maybe it will even generate a little money over time. Most importantly, it will help enrich my life and I may even help a few people along the way.
It is settled, I’m going to start a podcast. What are some of the topics that you’d like to hear me discuss in early episodes?
